What is Hassui Ceramic Premium Wood Finish?
Hassui Ceramic is a durable glass-like silicon based non-toxic finish for wood developed by renowned Japanese furniture maker Toshio Tokunaga. The coating penetrates beneath the surface of the wood then polymerizes with oxygen and moisture to create a water resistant barrier, protect from stains and preserve the natural look of the original wood. This product is ideal for chairs and other wooden furniture, countertops, spoons, tool handles, interior architectural details and more. Application is easily done with a brush that cleans up with rubbing alcohol. This product has passed Japanese Food Contact Safety Standards. Hassui Ceramic Wood Finish is not a nano coat finish, but an Si (silicon) based finish. We use this finish on our woodenware products—cups, mugs, bowls, plates and utensils. It is safe for hot and cold food, alcohol and liquids.
We encourage you to purchase a sample of this finish and see for yourself!
During our 2019 visit to Japan, we were able to meet Tokunaga and visit his furniture studio. There we discovered Hassui Ceramic and began the process of bringing it to the US.
While in Japan I learned of another finish known as liquid glass which was tasteless, odorless, and had a very matte finish. In fact, the wooden items I saw appeared not to have a finish at all, and yet still beaded water on its surface. I was obsessed. Back home I spent months searching for more information. If you search liquid glass on the internet, what comes up is either an epoxy or nano finish. But that’s not what the liquid glass I knew was.
