Woodturning: Hook Tools and Cutting Theory Lecture

Over the past few years I’ve been distilling down some of my ideas on the cutting theory of hook tools. Some of this comes from the work I am doing on my book on pole lathe turning for Lost Art Press—which has been in the works for years. (It’s written but I’m reshooting the photos…at a snails pace.) This distillation was furthered during the talk/lecture I did on cutting theory this past September at The Bowl Gathering in England and another short lecture I gave a week later at Von Hand Festival in Germany. I thought it would be nice to present this information to the larger turning community through a Zoom talk.

So, on April 21, 2024 at 11am Central Time (UK 5pm) I’ll demonstrate and discuss cutting theory and techniques with hook tools for the pole lathe, and also talk about gouges and hooks for use with electric lathes like the Japanese style or Western lathes. I’ll be demonstrating this on the 3 different types of lathes I currently use for woodenware production—a reciprocating lathe (pole lathe or bungee lathe), Western electric lathe and Japanese inspired electric lathe.

I will share what I’ve learned about turning tools through my years as a pole lathe turner, what I learned in Japan when I studied turning there, what I use in my work turning tableware now—wooden cups, bowls and plates, and what I’ve learned from teaching turning over the past decade. Some of you already know, but for those new here those years spent developing the tools and techniques for end grain and hollow forms on the pole lathe have become the basis for the many designs of the tools we see in use today in the pole lathe scene.
